Earlier today, the Hon. Commissioner for Environment & Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ikay V. Njoku, went to Otamiri sand mining sites, off Aba Road/Nekede, to inspect the degradation impact the sand mining activities have caused in the area.

He went with the permanent secretary, HOD Ecology dept., a consultant and two other personnels. The prosperity governor of the state, HE, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, had earlier last April, directed the stopping of sand mining in all the sites in Owerri municipal and across the state until further notice.

The Hon. Commissioner accosted both the miners, dump owners, sand dealers and tipper drivers, and delivered the message personally. He let them understand that their activities are causing a long term ecological hazard to the communities where they operate and should henceforth stop, or arrested.
